Yonghe Temple, also known as the Lama Temple, is one of the largest and best-preserved Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Beijing. The two halls with the most vibrant incense offerings are: the Wanfu Pavilion (Hall of Ten Thousand Fortunes), which houses an 18-meter-high Maitreya Buddha statue carved from a single white sandalwood trunk and serves as the core hall for making significant vows; and the Yonghe Gate Hall (Hall of the Heavenly Kings), the temple’s entrance hall dedicated to Maitreya and the Four Heavenly Kings, where incense burns perpetually.
Renowned as the "Cradle of the Dragon" due to its origin as the former residence of Emperor Yongzheng before his ascension to the throne, Yonghe Temple is especially famed for two areas of spiritual efficacy: first, career and academic success, as its association with the emperor symbolizes a "dragon emerging from the depths," attracting countless visitors praying for official promotion, scholarly achievement, and success in examinations—most prominently during the "first incense" ritual on Lunar New Year’s Day; second, peace and health, where devotees often pray for the well-being of their families, and the temple’s regular ceremonies are regarded as important religious activities for dispelling misfortunes, neutralizing negative astrological influences, and inviting blessings.
