Mount Putuo, the manifestation ground of Guanyin Bodhisattva, is known as the "Buddhist Kingdom on the Sea." Puji Temple, the principal monastery of the mountain, features the "Yongshou" bridge in front, a holy spot for making wishes, primarily for peace, health, and family harmony. The 33-meter-tall South Sea Guanyin Bronze Statue, facing the open ocean, is seen as a direct manifestation of the Bodhisattva. Making vows here (especially for offspring or deliverance from hardship) is believed to be most efficacious. The entire island is permeated with a faithful atmosphere of "if destined, you will come; if you wish, it will be answered."
