Yonghe Temple is Beijing’s most influential Tibetan Buddhist temple. Originally the Mansion of Prince Yong before Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty ascended the throne, it is also the birthplace of Emperor Qianlong—hence its reputation as "an auspicious place where dragons resided before ascending the throne." In 1744, Emperor Qianlong converted it into a Gelugpa Sect Tibetan Buddhist temple, making Yonghe Temple the political center of the Qing government for managing Mongolian and Tibetan affairs.
